Dear ECS Ambassadors,
My name is Cléa and I co-lead with Muki WP4 of the ECS project, which is to establish an European Citizen Science Academy.
As part of this endeavour, we want to organise a participatory process to develop a competency framework for citizens science researchers and practitioners.
Would you have time to either 1) take part in the process if you are interested? 2) share this call/registration form?
Below I explain what is a competency framework and our ambition to co-create this as a participatory process;
- A competency framework is a framework that delineates the skills, attitudes, knowledge and values that make up a certain role, educational degree and or profession. It basically links the know what (theory), know what (skills: ways to learn and apply theory) with practice (occupation, certificate or know to become). Once established, competency frameworks are used to define and suggest what and how to learn what is in a job description, develop training programmes, career progression, and accreditation.
- We will carry out the co-creation of this process via a method called the delphi method. There are three ways that individuals can engage- as a panel member, as a reviewer and as an observer.
- As a panellist: An individual affiliated to the European Research Area (ERA), with knowledge and experience of citizen science. A panellist will contribute to the selection of competencies that define a citizen science researcher or practitioner at different career levels.
- As a reviewer: A novice or experienced citizen science researcher or practitioner, within the ERA. A reviewer will review the results that come out of each panel workshop, and give feedback via a survey, on whether the competencies highlighted by the panel resonate with their role as a novice or experienced citizen science researcher/practitioner.
- As an observer: An individual who is affiliated to a country beyond the ERA, with knowledge and experience of citizen science. An observer is invited to participate to reflect on the process and the outcome of this process and understand how the European Citizen Science competency framework could be brought/adapted to their own context.
- We are looking for many different types of stakeholders to help us delineate the competency framework (i.e. researchers, citizen science practitioners, individuals working in a research funding body, industry/companies, representative of large data repositories such as EOSC, Zenodo, OpenAir.., working in a cultural organisation - such as museum, public library).
Why are we contacting you? as we want to have a representation from different european countries- and we would love it if you would be able to help us out with its dissemination. The process will be in English unfortunately, but we hope that this will not be a complete barrier for individuals of different ERA countries to contribute.
If you have any questions - do not hesitate to send them to me/ask me.

and thank you!
